Welcome to today’s Traditional Homestead Quick Tip!
These are short and sweet posts where I share with you a homestead tip that I’ve learned along the way, whether it be from my own experience from that of the wise homesteaders before us.
Today’s tip involves a very common problem for chicken keepers: picking. You’ve probably been there. Head out to the coop, find poor little Frederick suffering his position as low man on the totem pole with a few missing tail feathers and some battle wounds to go with it. Chickens see blood, and they pick…and pick…and pick…
It happens.
As long as it isn’t a serious deep wound situation– and especially when you need to act quickly- there’s a fast and easy way to help stop the bleeding before deciding which course of action to take next.
The good news? You probably have what you need right in your kitchen cupboard.
Corn starch. Arrowroot Powder. Flour.
Pick one.
Just a nice coating of any of these will quickly help clot and stop the bleeding and are perfectly safe to use on your animals. Humans too. Optionally, you can make a thick paste using one of these and water to stop bacteria from entering the wound.
I learned this one quite a few years ago and it has come to the rescue a countless number of times. It acts in the same way as a styptic powder you might get from the vet or from a livestock store. Except these pantry items are cheaper and quite likely more readily available.
I hope you enjoyed today’s Traditional Homestead Quick Tip!
